Semisynthetisches Derivat des Benzylpenicillin G. Inhibitor der bakteriellen Zellwandsynthese. Aktiv vor allem gegen Gram-negative, in geringem Umfang gegen Gram-positive Bakterien. In der Molekularbiologie für die Selektion resistenter Stämme eingesetzt (2). In Pflanzenzellkultur oft in Kombination mit Streptomycin oder Nystatin zur Vermeidung bakterieller Kontaminationen verwendet (3,4). Effekt auf die somatische Embryogenese (5).
