Guanidine thiocyanate (GTC) is a chaotropic agent and strong denaturant. It
solubilizes proteins by interfering with the hydrogen bonds and intramolecular
interactions resulting in disintegration of cellular structures. GTC is
involved in separation of ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) from ribosomes and
denatures RNase and can therefore be used for extraction of RNA.
