Chymotrypsin A (1). Suitable for the structural elucidation
of proteins. Catalyzes the hydrolysis of peptide and ester bonds at the
carboxyl group of a variety of amino acids primarily those with aromatic
or long aliphatic side chains (2).
Unit definition: 1 U catalyzes the hydrolysis of 1 µmole N-benzoyl- L-tyrosine
ethyl ester (BTEE) per minute at 25 °C, pH 7.8 (3). Activity in other units: ca. 1000 USP units/mg (1 USP unit causes
decrease in absorbance at 237 nm of 0.0075 per minute at 25 °C, pH 7.0 with
ATEE as substrate) (4).
